Current Federal, Provincial and Municipal Rebates

Toronto-Danforth (Ward 30): Solar Neighbourhoods

Through the Eco-energy program, those homeowners who have completed an Eco-energy audit, are eligible for a series of grants. Based on an installed cost of $8400.00 including GST  (for example)

Federal Eco-energy grant                                     $1250.00

Ontario Matching grant                                          $1250.00

Toronto Solar Neighbourhoods  (ward 30)             $1000.00

Federal income tax credit (2009 tax year)              $1080.00

PST rebate                                                             $  272.00

Total                                                                       $4852.00

The cost to you would then be:                               $3548.00

A 0% interest loan was available in Ward 30 (Riverdale) which allows you to pay for the system over 10 years.

Well, the party is over for federal rebates in Canada. The current budget says nothing about extending the Eco-Energy program past this fiscal year. This is nothing new for governments as they seldom give an indication of program extensions until, at best, the day before the program is to end.

When the Conservatives took over from the Liberals, we as an industry and I personally, were told by the Ministry of Natural Resources that they did not believe in climate change and would not be supporting our industry.

Well, 18 months after the program was put on hold by the Liberals (for a normal program review), it was back and in some respects became even better. The combination of the federal money, provincial money and City or Toronto 0% loan allowed for sales of water heaters faster than any time in the past 20 years.

The main benefit of this program, from a customer point of view, is that it allowed low income homeowners who would never have had the money to put down on the system to afford one (regardless of rebates). It is the first time there has actually been an truely equitable way to get systems installed.

If you have had an Eco-Energy audit, depending on the date, you are still able to install our system and get the federal and provincial rebates and hopefully the City of Toronto will bring back the TSNI program.
